Aerobic and Resistance Exercises can Lower Blood Pressure in Older Hypertensive Women

A recent study suggested that interval aerobic exercises and resistance exercises lower blood pressure over a period of 24 hours in older hypertensive women who are under treatment.

The key findings were as follows:

  • Immediately after exercising, a lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) value was observed in the continuous aerobic (CA) and interval aerobic (IA) groups when compared to the control (C) and resistance exercise (RE) groups.
  • 24 hours after the exercise sessions, a greater reduction of SBP was observed after IA than other types of exercises.
  • The reduction of blood pressure with RE was greater than CA and C groups.
  • While patients were awake, the reduction of SBP after IA was more intensive and while they were asleep, IA and RE showed greater reductions of SBP.
  • Reduction of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was observed only after RE.

Thus, aerobic exercises in the interval mode and resistance exercises are more effective when compared to other exercises in reducing blood pressure over a period of 24 hours in older hypertensive women under treatment.
