Indian Children With GI Infections Received Better Treatment That Previously Recorded

According to the data collected through the National Family Health survey 2019- 2021 (NFHS-5), children with diarrhoea received better treatment than what was observed in National Family Health Survey 2015-2016 (NFHS-4). The field work for the survey occurred in two phases, phase one from June 2019 to January 2020 and phase two from January 2020 to April 2021 by 17 Field Agencies and gathered information from 636,699 households.

The findings were as follows:

  • Prevalence of diarrhoea in the 2 weeks preceding the survey was 9.2% in NFHS-4 and reduced to 7.3%.
  • Percentage of children receiving oral rehydration salts (ORS) for diarrhoea in the 2 weeks preceding the survey increased to 60.6% in NFHS-5 from 50.6% in NFHS-4.
  • Percentage of children with diarrhoea in the 2 weeks preceding the survey who received zinc rose from 20.3% in NFHS-4 to 30.5 % in NFHS-5.
  • Percentage of children with diarrhoea in the 2 weeks preceding the survey who were taken to a health facility or health provider increased from 67.9% in NFHS-4 to 68.9% in NFHS-5.

In conclusion, the findings of this study show that there was a decline in proportion of children who had diarrhoea as well as an increase in those who were given medical attention and received treatment for the same.
