Higher Intake of Preformed Vitamin A In Mid-Childhood Lowers Risk of Incident Asthma
According to a study published in the ‘European Respiratory Journal’, higher intake of preformed vitamin A and not β-carotene, is associated with higher subsequent lung function, lower risk of fixed airflow limitation and incident asthma.
Data for this study was collected from 8135 participants at 7 years of age to assess dietary intakes of preformed vitamin A and β-carotene equivalent and their effects on respiratory outcomes in childhood.
The key results were as follows:
- High intake of preformed vitamin A was associated with a high forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and forced expiratory flow (FEF).
- No evidence of association was found between carotene intake and overall lung function measures.
- Inverse association between preformed vitamin A intake and incident asthma.
In conclusion, the results of the study suggest that higher dietary intake of preformed vitamin A in mid-childhood, renders positive effects on lung function and decreases the risk of incident asthma.
